Check if an image is AI-generated

Check the metadata, software traces and provenance information available in your image for free. This tool surfaces technical signals, but does not produce an automatic verdict about the file's origin.

Local analysis: the file is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to our servers.

What does this AI image checker examine?

This tool examines technical information available in the file to identify useful signals about its origin and history. It checks metadata such as EXIF/XMP, software references and C2PA provenance information when available.

It does not turn these signals into an arbitrary "AI probability" score. Metadata can be edited, information can disappear during re-export, and many authentic images circulate without provenance data.

EXIF/XMP metadata

Camera information, capture settings, dates and other metadata stored in the file when available.

Software traces

References left by some creation, editing or export software.

Content Credentials / C2PA

Signed provenance information when available and verifiable.

Can an AI-generated image be identified with certainty?

Not from a single automated signal. An AI-generated image may contain no identifiable trace, while an authentic photograph may lose its metadata after being uploaded, messaged, screenshotted or edited.

The purpose of this pre-analysis is therefore to surface and explain the available evidence, not to manufacture certainty that the file itself cannot support.

How can you check whether an image is AI-generated?

A serious assessment combines several sources of information: provenance, metadata, software traces, searches for earlier versions, context and visual examination. No single one should be interpreted in isolation.

When is human analysis useful?

If a decision depends on the answer — a publication, purchase, dispute or report to a third party — automated signals may not be enough.

Bureau Attest cross-examines the available evidence and issues an Authenticity Analysis Report bound to the examined file by its SHA-256 fingerprint and verifiable online. If the examination cannot reasonably reach a conclusion, you are not charged.

Frequently asked questions

Is this AI image checker free?
Yes. The pre-analysis is free and runs directly in your browser.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The file analyzed by this tool remains in your browser and is not uploaded to Bureau Attest's servers.
Does missing EXIF metadata mean an image was generated by AI?
No. Metadata is frequently removed by social networks, messaging apps, screenshots and re-exports. Its absence is an observation, not proof.
Why doesn't Bureau Attest display an “AI percentage”?
Because a standalone percentage can imply a level of certainty that the available evidence does not support. Bureau Attest instead presents the observed signals and their limitations.
